824 Naval Air Squadron

The expert pilots of 824 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) train recruits to fly and maintain the world’s number-one anti-submarine helicopter: the Merlin Mk 2.

Role

Led by Commander Chris Jones, with the aid of eight helicopters and state-of-the-art simulators, 824 Naval Air Squadron provides the Royal Navy frontline helicopter squadrons with qualified pilots, aircrew and ground crew.

Trainee pilots, observers and aircrew work together as a team during the 44-week course, covering all aspects of Merlin operations – submarine hunting, boarding operations, search and rescue missions, counter-piracy, carrying cargo.
