Summary

The SEN Virtual Workshops are running throughout June 2023, with the remote sessions from 3.30pm -4.30pm. These workshops will explore and summarise the recommendations from the EEF's SEN in mainstream schools guidance report, and the whole school SEND teacher handbook, in a science context. Over the month we will exemplify and provide an overview of strategies to use in the secondary science classroom to support pupils with SEN.

Themes will include:

Session 1, Wednesday 7th June:  

Ensuring students with Dyslexia are getting the best deal 

Session 2: Wednesday 14th  June: 

Ensuring students with EAL are getting the best deal 

Session 3, Wednesday 21st June: 

Supporting pupils with SEN in mainstream schools: Secondary Science

This workshop will explore and summarise the recommendations from the EEF’s SEN in mainstream schools guidance report, and the Whole School SEND teacher handbook, in a science context. We will exemplify and provide an overview of strategies to use in the secondary science classroom to support pupils with SEN. Themes will include:  

  • Creating an inclusive environment,
  • Strategies to scaffold learning  
  • Evidence informed teaching strategies  

Session 4, Monday 26th June: 

Working effectively with and making best use of Teaching Assistants in secondary science

This workshop will explore and summarise some of the recommendations from the EEF's 'Making Best Use of TAs' and 'SEN in mainstream schools' guidance reports. The aim of the session is to support teachers to reflect on how they deploy TAs in the secondary science classroom, and to raise awareness of evidence informed strategies for their effective deployment.
