STEPWELL

PLACE BASED TRAVEL/ CURATED JOURNEYS

We are an educational travel provider specialising in South India.

Since 2004 our work has involved curating, organising and facilitating experiential educational journeys through the richly varied landscapes of South India.

Each journey is developed around specific themes which explore the changing geographical, historical, artistic and cultural dynamics of India’s modern context. These provide a focus for what is encountered, allowing us to think, reflect and learn as we travel.

Our strength is our capacity to help people to appreciate and accurately interpret what they see. In our travel projects, in which we connect with a variety of different communities, we aim to travel in as light-footed a way as possible helping people develop authentic understanding through immersive experience.

We hope you will feel encouraged to come with us, and experience something of the extraordinary richness of life that south India has to offer.

It is very rare to find people that can so well balance the depths of authentic understanding of India with incredibly articulate interpretation. Such a balance you find at Stepwell.

Our Travel Projects

  • Curated journeys exploring cultural themes

Our learning journeys and study tours are opportunities for travellers who have a personal or professional interest in specific themes. The theme is explored within South India’s richly diverse cultural context, providing an insider's view of the changing landscape, heritage, and wildlife.

  • Professional development visits for teachers

These CPD programmes enable teachers and educators to gather information and teaching resource ideas to use and share on their return to their schools. Each study visit has a specific subject theme, developed to suit the key stage and curriculum requirements of the participants.

  • Curriculum alligned immersive learning

Our school trips are curriculum-linked immersive learning experiences, travelling for two weeks within two states of South India: Karnataka and Kerala. The travel itinerary enables experiences of contextualised case studies, deepening understanding of subject specific topics through shared activities and community collaborations.

  • Field trips, placements and research projects

Our enrichment provide elements of higher education programmes of study and are learning experiences for deepening and enriching understanding of research subject areas. Our travel itineraries are developed in close collaboration with the academic teaching faculty to support a theme of study, and include teaching practice placements and work experiences.

It was the best trip of my life. I know we all feel privileged to have experienced Indian life and culture with such depth and in so short a space of time. The hospitality was second to none.

Locations

The aim of the trip for me was to be able to return to England with sufficient knowledge and resources to teach my children about life in India; the similarities and differences to the life they are used to in England. The trip more than fulfilled this! I have a wealth of knowledge, more photographs than I know what to do with and wonderful resources that will complement my teaching and enhance the children’s learning about India.
