Our contribution to climate protection - internationally and nationally

With our contribution to climate protection, we have not only voluntarily offset our unavoidable emissions internationally, but have also made an additional contribution to regional CO2 avoidance - here in Germany. Internationally, we offset our CO2 emissions through high-quality Gold Standard climate protection projects.

Together with Stadtwerke München, we promote the maintenance and expansion of renewable energy plants in Germany. Thus, in addition to international CO2 offsetting, we contribute to the national energy transition and emissions avoidance.

International commitment

Project background

Degraded land, originally forest land, later used for extensive cattle ranching, is reforested with mostly native tree species and gradually converted into mixed forests. The forest management received FSC certification (Forest Stewardship Council) and the cocoa production is EU organic certified.

 

Contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals

  • SDG 1: No poverty
    More than 1,000 people from 5 local communities benefit from newly created jobs.
  • SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth
    More than 150 people are employed permanently, working on average 40 hours per week, and taking part in at least one training per year.
  • SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production
    The project creates the conditions for a more responsible and sustainable supply of wood and other forest products.
  • SDG 13: Climate action
    The project has so far sequestered 2,608,807 tCO2 through afforestation/reforestation.
  • SDG 15: Life on land
    Reforestation with 20 native tree species and protecting more than 30 other tree species.

 

Status 2023

Project background

In Ghana more than 80% of the population use solid fuels for cooking. Pollutant emissions from the less efficient way of cooking (often over an open fire) significantly affect the health of the local population. The project will distribute more efficient cooking stoves that reduce cooking time, produce less smoke, and require 46% less fuel.

 

Contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals

  • SDG 1: No poverty
    Each year time and money is saved due to reduced fuel consumption.
  • SDG 3: Good health and well-being
    The efficient cooking stoves reduce pollutant emissions during cooking, improving the health of the local population.
  • SDG 4: Quality education
    The efficient cookstoves reduce the amount of time spent on cooking. Time saved can be spent on other activities.
  • SDG 5: Gender equality
    Women's unpaid cooking effort is reduced, thereby decreasing gender inequity.
  • SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy
    Low-pollution and efficient energy for cooking is essential to supply millions of people sustainably and cheaply.
  • SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth
    Through the commitment to the project, the manufacturing, sale and distribution of the stoves around 1,000 new jobs have already been created in the region.
  • SDG 13: Climate action
    The project has reduced over 5 million tonnes of CO2 to date.
  • SDG 15: Life on land
    The project significantly reduces the demand for wood and thus protects regional forests.

Certification

The climate protection projects are all certified by the "Gold Standard for the Global Goals" - one of the most meaningful and stringent standards for CO2 offset projects. In addition, these climate protection projects contribute to sustainable development in the respective project region and generate social benefits.

The regional commitment

Construction and preservation of renewable energy plants

In addition to international contribution to climate protection and CO2 offsetting, we also contribute to carbon reduction in Germany. Our regional commitment with Stadtwerke München promotes the expansion and maintenance of renewable energy plants in Germany and the region. In this way, we support direct CO2 avoidance on site and thus contribute to accelerating the national energy transition.

Background information

Preservation of existing renewable energy plants

In Germany, renewable energy plants are only financially supported for the first 20 years after construction. After this subsidy period, due to low feed-in prices and rising maintenance costs, some of these plants will not continue to operate, even though they could still generate CO2-free electricity for years to come. In addition, compared to new plants, existing plants do not cause any CO2 emissions during the construction of the plant, so that they contribute directly to CO2 avoidance in Germany by continuing to operate.

Expansion of renewable energy plants

The potential of new plants built in Germany is often not fully utilized. For example, technically suitable roof areas for the generation of solar energy remain unused, although they could make a major contribution to the energy transition. Our contribution subsidizes such projects in order to make optimal use of potentials for renewable energies and thus to further increase their share in electricity generation.

Transparency

As a partner of Stadtwerke München, Verico SCE verifies the use of the financial contribution for regional commitment. In this way, an independent verification institution ensures that the subsidy contribution is used for the expansion and preservation of additional renewable energy plants in Germany.
