Claus and Mary Moser Scholarship

The Moser Scholarship supports young people to study for a first degree or equivalent professional qualification in engineering or accounting. The scholarship will pay home tuition fees*, and associated study costs. The specific amount awarded will be dependent on the candidate’s individual circumstances and university location.

*The trust will help candidates who are successful at interview to negotiate home fees from their chosen university. The final award of a Moser Scholarship will be dependent on successfully getting a 'home' tuition fee offer.

Please make sure you meet the following criteria before applying:

1. Be aged 28 years or younger.
2. Be an asylum seeker (or the dependent of an asylum seeker) who is awaiting a decision or appealing a decision for asylum from the UK Home Office; OR a person (or dependent of a person) who claimed asylum in the UK and has been granted Limited Leave to Remain or some other form of temporary status such as Calais Leave, Discretionary Leave to Remain, Section 67 leave, UASC leave. 3. A student wishing to pursue an undergraduate degree or equivalent professional qualification in engineering or accounting.

Applications for the 2024 intake will open on 10th April 2024, and close at 5pm GMT on 10th May 2024. Interviews for successful candidates will be held in June 2024.

Origins of the Claus & Mary Moser Scholarship:

Claus Moser came to the UK in 1936 aged 13 with his brother and parents as Jewish refugees from Berlin. Originally a statistician his working life took him through academia, the civil service, banking, music and the arts. Throughout his life he used every opportunity to speak about his Jewish background, to speak out for refugees and against anti-Semitism and other forms of racism. Claus was a passionate believer in increasing access to higher education for people from all backgrounds and always felt very grateful for the educational opportunities he had had.

He and Mary met when students at the London School of Economics. Mary’s career was in social work although, as a talented artist, she pursued her art work whenever she could. As someone who had always combined art with her career and family life, Mary always supported and encouraged artists for whom art was not their first career. Claus died in 2015 aged 92, and Mary in 2022 aged 100.

The Claus and Mary Moser Scholarship aims to give a student from a refugee background an opportunity to pursue their education with a higher education degree course.
