Key learning points
- When using column addition, start by adding the numbers with the smallest place value first.
- Make sure that any regrouped 10s are added with the values in the tens column.
- Make sure that any regrouped 100s are added with the values in the hundreds column.
Common misconception
Pupils may forget to refer to the size of the numbers when adding and when regrouping.
Encourage pupils to talk about the place value of the digits. Ten ones can be regrouped as a ten; ten tens can be regrouped as a hundred.
