Period pains hurt just as much as having a heart attack, according to research

HAVING a womb comes with a whole host of inconveniences - from hormonal mood swings to the monthly bleed.

And now doctors have revealed period pains hurts just as much as having a heart attack - according to research - and we can totally believe it.

John Guillebaud, Professor of reproductive health at University College London, told Quartz period pain can be as "bad as having a heart attack".

He added the area has been overlooked because "men don't get it".

"Men don't get it and it hasn't been given the centrality it should have," he said.

"I do believe it's something that should be taken care of, like anything else in medicine."

Frank Tu, director of gynaecological pain at NorthShore University HealthSystem, told Quartz many doctors are taught Ibuprofen painkillers "should be good enough" for treating cramps.

While some lucky women have relatively pain-free periods, around a fifth of us suffer from cramps which are severe enough to stop us doing day-to-day activities.

These pains normally last for around three days.

In more women's issues, the average woman takes 13.5 minutes to orgasm and being on top is the best sex position – but one in six NEVER climax.
