Use cheap but accurate Covid tests at half-term

Cheaper lateral flow tests will replace PCR kits for travellers in time for half-term after a new study said that they were more accurate at detecting coronavirus than previously thought.

From October 24 passengers reaching Britain can use the rapid coronavirus tests for the day-two post-arrival checks. They will have to buy them from government-approved sellers in the same way that PCR tests are sold.

Crucially they will go on sale from October 22, the first day of the autumn half term. The move is expected to cut the cost of a holiday for a family of four by about £200. Lateral flow tests cost £25, replacing PCR tests, which are on average £75 each.
