An archaeologist who found an 800-year-old medieval jug in almost perfect condition in Dublin has described it as a “very rare” discovery. It was recovered during a dig on Ship Street Great ahead of the construction of a hotel extension, apartments and a new public plaza beside the Radisson Blu Royal hotel.

Johnny Ryan, owner of Archaeology and Built Heritage, said it was unusual to find ancient pottery in such good condition, but he was disappointed the excavation did not uncover any artefacts dating back to the Viking era. “When we took off the post-medieval layer we were hoping to find Viking burials because that area around Dublin Castle is a hotbed for them,” he said.
