Fathers are taking a greater role in their children’s lives. One in 14 are the primary caregiver for their baby, a study into the changing dynamics of family life has revealed.

The study, which tracked the development of babies in almost 9,000 families in England, showed that the father was primarily raising their child in 7 per cent of cases, compared with 0.11 per cent 20 years ago.

It is hoped the long-term data will give academics a broad view of factors that can influence how a child develops in their early years.

The first tranche of data focused on the progress of children nine months and under. Experts said the findings showed “encouraging signs of resilience” for children despite fears the pandemic had harmed
