Secondary pupils start to return, but some schools stay shut

Tens of thousands of teenagers returned to school today for the first time in months, but not all schools opened their doors.

Only about 7 per cent of secondary pupils in England were eligible to return as schools can take just one quarter of all pupils in years 10 and 12, those due to take their GCSEs and A levels next year. This means many will attend only a day a week.

In parts of the northwest of England some schools did not reopen amid concerns about the coronavirus infection rate being too high.

It came as fresh research showed that children had spent an average of only 2.5 hours a day doing schoolwork during lockdown.
