This highly practical and intensive one-year postgraduate programme offers training that will develop professional artists’ of the future.

The programme not only concentrates on acting, singing and dancing; but also gives students the opportunities to develop directing skills and Physical Theatre training.

The degree can be tailored to the specific student and gives the opportunity to develop as a unique artist. All of our teaching staff are theatre professionals that work in higher education as well as the industry.

UWTSD Cardiff offers a selection of postgraduate degrees that will provide the students with a solid technique hand in hand with a broad understanding of the creative industries in Wales and beyond.

What you will learn

This course will develop the student’s skills as an all-around performer with an emphasis on:

1. Public Performances

Students are provided with the experience that corresponds to working on a number of professionally staged performances. They will rehearse and perform a number of roles under professional direction and production conditions. Students are expected to demonstrate a high degree of ability to work independently, with a director, and in collaboration with their peers. 

2. Core skills and Techniques

Students can select from a number of modules to specialise including:

  • Advanced Dance
  • Advanced Singing
  • Advanced Vocal Training
  • Devising and Physical Theatre
  • Directing 1

3. Professional Development

Professional development will include an agent’s showcase and the preparation of a professional development portfolio. The portfolio will include evidence of research, reflective writing and a collection of materials compiled over the duration of the student’s studies, including a list of the activities and events that they have been involved in and a range of professional documents. Developed in close consultation with a Personal Tutor and tailored to the specific professional requirements of each student.  As a whole, the contents of the portfolio will be evidence of the student’s individual artistic profile and reflect on their ongoing development as a performer.

Cardiff has a huge student accommodation, and there are no end-of-student living opportunities open to students who choose to study in Cardiff. There are various purpose-built student accommodation providers in the city and our accommodation team will be able to guide you through the options.

  • Public Performances/events
    Students regularly have the opportunity to take part in performances/events throughout their degree, in which we can see growth and application of skills and knowledge. 

    Regular tutorials
    We hold formal and informal tutorials throughout the degree in which each student discusses their work with the module tutor or Programme Director. We look at practical development, conceptual growth and future intentions.

    Presentations
    Presentations normally take place at the end of a module, exhibition or performance, in order to measure a student’s performance against assessment criteria.

    Process workbooks
    Students will document their process and practical work in a workbook which demonstrates their learning and individual pathway.

    Professional Development Portfolio
    The Professional Development Portfolio will include evidence of research, reflective writing and a collection of materials compiled over the duration of the student’s studies, including a list of the activities and events that they have been involved in and a range of professional documents.
