Climate change is the greatest health threat facing humanity – and the work of physiologists is vital to answering this emergency.

Keynote speakers:

  • Professor Hugh Montgomery – Professor of Intensive Care Medicine and Lancet Countdown on health and climate change
  • Dr Madeleine Thomson – Head of Climate Impacts at Wellcome
  • Professor Dr Hans-Otto Pörtner – Co-Chair, Working Group II, IPCC

Physiology is an essential part of the scientific response to climate change as it helps us understand the consequences on the human body. As the science of how the body works, physiology explains the impact of climate change on our health – and is therefore vital for the very future of our species.

Physiological research is contributing to efforts to reduce emissions and urgently adapt to protect communities and natural habitats. Physiologists are finding solutions for people facing hotter temperatures, extreme weather, fires and floods.

This online meeting will bring together physiologists from across the world along with speakers from organisations including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate, Wellcome and Lancet Countdown to discuss research gaps in this field and policy priorities. This event is in partnership with the ‘The Lancet Countdown on health and climate change’.

Join for keynote sessions from climate change leaders and discussions sessions on the latest research. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss their research and contribute to identification of research gaps and priorities for health policy.

Why attend this meeting?

  • Engage with fellow physiologists on their vital physiological research in the fight against climate change and discuss how disciplines work together to answer the emergency.
  • Hear from Wellcome about their new grants for research projects on climate and health
  • Understand the views of climate change leaders with keynote sessions including Intergovernmental Panel on Climate, Wellcome and Lancet Countdown
  • Identify research gaps that require focus from research funders
  • Agree policy priorities to meet the physiological challenges of climate change

This event is in partnership with the The Lancet Countdown on health and climate change.
