Help for service leavers, service personnel and families from Defence Transition Services

Information about how military personnel and their families can get more support and extra help from Defence Transition Services throughout career when leaving the armed forces.

Overview

Defence Transition Services (DTS) can provide information and support for those service leavers and their families who are most likely to face challenges as they leave the armed forces and adjust to civilian life. DTS work directly with you to provide information and facilitate access to the support you need, whether that be from another government department, local authorities, the NHS or trusted charities.

In addition, DTS support through career preparation for life outside the military through housing advice and guidance as well as a programme of housing briefs available to all serving personnel and their families accessible at any point through career – see the housing, accommodation, and relocation link below.

What we can help you with

DTS can sign post and facilitate access to support on the following:

  • Mental health
  • Physical health
  • Drugs and alcohol misuse
  • Training, education and employment
  • Housing, accommodation and relocation (including MOD Referral Scheme and civilian housing briefs)
  • Finance, debt and benefits
  • Children, family and relationships
  • Supporting agencies

How we can help you

If you are a service leaver, who is recognised by their unit as someone who may need extra support on leaving the armed forces, beyond that which is already provided by Defence and the Royal Navy, Army or Royal Air Force, you can be referred to DTS. As a service leaver or family member, you can also self refer to DTS. DTS clients may also be referred to us by Defence contractors, such as the Career Transition Partner (CTP) or by third parties, such as charities or local authorities who have been approached for help.

DTS works with you on a one-to-one basis, building a trusted relationship in order to fully understand your needs, coordinate the right sources of information and simplify your access to the support you need.

If you are looking for more information on housing, use the housing link above to access our online housing briefs, available at any point whilst you are serving.

Defence Holistic Transition Policy

DTS was established in October 2019 as part of Defence’s Holistic Transition Policy (part 1: directive) (ODT, 1.84 MB) and Holistic Transition Policy (part 2: guidance) (ODT, 1.94 MB) or JSP100 as it is known internally. Details of DTS can be found in chapter two of the policy document.

How to make a referral

There are two ways to make contact with DTS if you, or someone you know, might benefit from DTS’s support:
