General Information

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Maltese Commerce Department of the Ministry for the Economy and Industry are organising an online seminar as part of 2021 Malta SME Week under the heading of “Internationalisation of SMEs - Industrial Property”.

An increasing number of European small and medium sized-companies (SMEs) are growing their business in international environments in which it is essential to consider some aspects of the protection of trademarks, patents, designs and copyright. This seminar will look at the various aspects that SMEs need consider when going international, how to set the first steps in the world of internationalization and how to set up an international strategy.

Together with speakers from the Commerce Department, EUIPO and Trade Malta the seminar will look also at what are the typical Intellectual Property rights to use and manage to support the process of internationalisation. The discussion will also be complimented as to why for small businesses that choose to expand internationally, protecting IP rights is not only useful but also indispensable to avoid or mitigate risks associated with IP infringement.

After this webinar you will:

  • Understand the competitive benefits of internationalisation for small businesses
  • Become familiar with main factors to consider when establishing the internationalisation strategy
  • Appreciate what are the main Intellectual Property rights available and their impact in international trade
  • Learn how and whom to approach to protect and enforce IP rights when considering internationalisation
  • Discover the main IP registration tools in Malta and at EUIPO to apply and register IP rights
  • Become familiar with the SME Fund grant scheme available also for Maltese SMEs and businesses
